Illegal Circulation of Fake 64M DRAMS with Fraudulently Used HEI’S Trademark

– BEING SOLD IN SOUTHEAST ASIAN MARKET AT PRICES LOWER THAN 10% THAN REGULAR PRICES
– USE COARSE LASER MARKING AND DIFFERENT SERIAL NUMBER FROM GENUINE PRODUCTS

It has been reported that fake 64M DRAMs with fraudulently used HEI (President : Kim Young-Hwan) trademark are being illegally sold in Southeast Asian region.

After being reported of rumors that HEI’S 64M DRAMs are being distributed at low prices in Southeast Asia and U.S. region, HEI has collected and investigated products that were distributed recently, and found out that its trademark is being used on other chip manufacturers’ products. HEI is trying to analyze the cause and to come up with the solutions.

HEIs Director of Business Department, Kim Dae Soo said “Because products with HEI’s semiconductor mark [HY] are recognized as the best ones in Southeast Asia region, especially China, some module manufacturers and sellers who want to use this recognition to make profits are causing problems by selling fake products illegally. In particular, it is highly possible that fake products might have been imported into other foreign countries at prices lower than 10% compared to regular prices.

Fake 64M DRAMs exposed in the investigation have coarse laser marking or ink marking, and somdetimes have different serial numbers from the regular products and use out-moded packaging [SOJ]. HEI has sent an official document for cooperation to the chip manufacturers whose products have been used in making fake products, calling for the truth of the matter and the prevention from reoccurences.

Previously HEI has sent an official document for cooperation to Japanese chip manufacturers involved in the event when similar fraudulent use of trademark occurred in Japan last April, and has been promised of prevention from reoccurences.

HEI has announced “As we all know, selling products using other manufacturers’ trademark without their permission is an illegal act that harms healthy distribution order, and HEI will do its best to prevent customers who have trust in HEI products from being victimized through speedy and thorough invetigation of related chip manufacturers, forgerers of trademark, and distributors”. Because fake 64M DRAMs may have some defects in their quality, and there’s no way to demand aftersales service or compensation when defect is noticed, consumers should prevent themselves from being victimized by buying products using normal route of purchasing and confirming whether or not they are genuine products.
