SK hynix Inc. (or “the company”, www.skhynix.com) announced today that it has obtained the AAA certification, the highest level of voluntary compliance traders for strategic items*, from South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy(MOTIE).

The AAA ratings are given to the companies with the export control compliance programs that are in line with the export control regulations and international trade standard, where the companies have the ability to independently determine whether an item is classified as strategic item as well as the ability to analyze the end-users.

South Korea’s trade ministry selects companies with excellent export control compliance programs and categorizes them into three groups – A, AA and AAA – every year, granting the AAA ratings only to those with the most excellent export control compliance programs.

The move comes at a time when many countries and governments around the world make utmost efforts to properly manage global supply chains, introducing measures aimed at preventing semiconductors from being used for weapons of mass destruction or other illegitimate purposes.

SK hynix, with its longtime efforts to improve the export control compliance program for strategic items and export control measures, has been strengthening the capabilities by making persistent investments. Following the obtainment of its first certificate as a self-compliance trader in 2005, it has maintained its AA ratings since acquiring the status in 2014 before accomplishing the highest level of AAA this year.

Hyundai Electronics (CEO: Young-Hwan Kim) announced that it has concluded a contract for OEM supply of 2 million PC monitors with Packard Bell/ NEC, one of the five major PC industries recently, and began to supply the products. This contract, which is worth of $300 million, consists of 15/ 17/ 19 inch CRT and 15 inch LCD monitors which Hyundai Electronics have sold under their own brand. And they explained that since credibility for their products has been secured in the monitor market they could forward the launching date for the products ahead of schedule. Especially since these products supplied will be equipped into all the Packard Bell/ NEC PC as bundle, Hyundai Electronics separately designs the cast for the monitor’s exterior cabinet to fit the Packard Bell/ NEC PC and then supplies. Also, in case of the monitor with integrated speaker, they adopted the audio circuit design by DAT (Diamond Audio Technologies), so they achieved such a high quality sound system comparable with any professional-use audio system in terms of its sound quality. This contract for export is a kind of genuine OEM method in that Hyundai Electronics itself has produced and supplied the cast for production of the monitor’s exterior cabinet in response of a request by Packard Bell/ NEC. And Hyundai Electronics said that Packard Bell/ NEC recognizes them as a long-term OEM supply partner, and for several years hereafter the company designates Hyundai Electronics as the supply line for related products. Hyundai Electronics expects the export of monitors to Packard Bell/ NEC to increase according to the changes in situation hereafter, anticipating to reach this year’s export target, 2 million, without any difficulty. In the coming 2000, it has a prospect that it can export 3 million monitors easily.

HEI(President : Kim Young-Hwan) reported it will supply CDMA digital phones worth £Ü450 billions(total of 1.5 million handsets worth U$330 millions) to the mobile service operators in the United States and Central and South America, including PrimeCo, a major PCS operator in the United States, from this month.

In these export contract deals, HEI will supply PrimeCo, PCS operator in the southeastern part of the United States, a total of 1 million units – 500,000 PCS phones from this month until March of next year, followed by another additional 500,000 units from April of next year – and also another 500,000 units of PCS and digital cellular handsets in the United States, and Central and South America.

HEI will supply PCS phones to PrimeCo., a PCS service operator in the United States, through AudioVox, a major American handset distributor, and its contract deal of exporting 500,000 units in total, starting with 150,000 units presently under shipment, 100,000 units in December, and another 250,000 units in the first quarter of next year, is the largest single handset supply contract ever by a Korean handset manufacturer. Also HEI’s contract deals of exporting a total of 500,000 CDMA PCS/digital phones, including two contract deals of exporting 200,000 units each with PCS operators in Central and South American region, and 100,000 units with PCS operators in the United States, are making the prospects of Korean-made CDMA handset exports brighter.

Amidst a recent decrease in export of Korean products, cellular phones are expected to play the leading role for newly developed strategic export items. In particular, Gulliver(HGP-1200), the main export high quality PCS phone model in these contract deals, made a splash in the first half of this year in the domestic market with its ergonomical design and elegant color of champagne gold.

By releasing new models of ultra-light weight of less than 100g, and of folder-type phones with new design concepts, HEI plans to make a hit in mobile phone market inside and outside the country with its high-tech design and value. Meanwhile, the demand for CDMA PCS/DIGITAL cellular phones is expected to increase from 6 million handsets next year to 8 millions in 2000 in U.S, and from 3 millions next year to 4 millions in 2000 in Central and South American market. As the demand for CDMA cellular phones in the future international cellular phone market is expected to increase rapidly, domestic cellular phone makers will start exporting thier products abroad sooner than expected.
