<p>SK hynix established the new Revolutionary Technology Center (RTC) under its Research &amp; Development early this year to secure a competitive advantage in future semiconductor technology. The decision reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring innovative technology that will set forth a new paradigm in the semiconductor industry with a mid-to-long-term perspective, instead of being complacent in maintaining its current dominant position in technology.</p>
<p>Newsroom sat down with RTC leaders to listen to the vision they have for the ‘innovation’. We also asked them what capabilities and skills are required to work for the team for future talents wanting to find a position in the field of technology at SK hynix.</p>
<h3 class="tit">Securing Next Generation Semiconductor Memory and Core Technologies in accordance with Changes in Computing Environment</h3>
<p>The semiconductor memory industry is facing a few challenges. The competition for scaling for both DRAM and NAND is intensifying, and securing advanced leading technology has become more important than ever before. Some experts forecast that a limit in scaling is just around the corner.</p>
<p>An inflection point in the field of computing systems that use semiconductor memory is also nearing. The semiconductor industry has recently begun to explore Post von Neumann computing, moving beyond the current von Neumann architecture where semiconductor memory is are dependent on processors.</p>
<p>New concept of computing methods such as heterogeneous computing<sup>1</sup> and neuromorphic computing<sup>2</sup> has recently been raised as alternatives, while research on the next-generation memories such as PCM<sup>3</sup> and MRAM<sup>4</sup> is increasingly active. In addition, many are turning their attention to the chips that converge semiconductor memory such as PNM5), PIM6), CIM7) with logic unit in various forms.</p>
<p>RTC is responsible for securing future competitiveness for SK hynix through technology innovation in response to the rapidly changing environment of the semiconductor industry. It primarily focuses on gaining necessary core technologies needed to overcome the limits of scaling DRAM and NAND. RTC also takes on the role of securing a new-type memory that can create new values in the next-generation technology phase. RTC is also dedicated to predicting the next-generation computing method and ensuring a new concept semiconductor technology preemptively in accordance with such forecasts.</p>

<p>Myung Hee Na, the head of RTC said, “A possible change in the computing method doesn’t necessarily mean a change for the entire frame of the semiconductor industry, so ensuring future continuity of DRAM and NAND is critical,” emphasizing the RTC’s role of finding innovative and groundbreaking ways to do so.</p>
<p>She explained that RTC is especially focused on neuromorphic computing among the various post von Neumann computing and is making great efforts to ensure the appropriate semiconductor memory  technology.</p>
<p>To this end, RTC integrated New Memory Technology Development (NM TD), which creates new values by developing the next-generation memories, and New Architecture Research (NAR), which analyzes future technology trends and studies semiconductor technology that fits the next generation computing system, under one organizational roof.</p>
<p>NM TD is focused on developing the next-generation memory technology and commercializing the technology to enable mass production to prepare for the next 2 to 3 years. The organization is also responsible for identifying technology trends for the next 5 to 10 years and exploring and securing core technologies that will enable new innovations for the next-generation source of revenue.</p>
<p>NAR has a longer-term perspective and oversees preemptively various advanced technologies to explore and verify necessary ‘candidate technologies’ to innovate future semiconductor technology. To this end, it focuses on studying the principles of technologies and tests feasibility as well as conducting various verification processes such as leveraging its own resources to carry out actual development.</p>
<h3 class="tit">Innovation to Remain Global Technology Leader Status</h3>

<p><strong>Q. What are the objectives of RTC?</strong></p>
<p>RTC aims to take on a more long-term perspective into the future beyond just the next 5 years or 10 years and continue innovation for the next 30 years to help SK hynix remain a technology leader. That comes down to two specific goals; achieving technological innovation that can deliver impact on the market and expanding the influence SK hynix has on memory semiconductor R&amp;D to solidify its status as a global technology leader in the overall semiconductor industry.</p>
<p><strong>Q. What are the strategies to achieve this goal?</strong></p>
<p>The first thing we’d have to do is to realize the next generation of the semiconductor memory that can exceed the technological inflection point and expand the current value of DRAM and NAND. Second, we are focused on exploring the various alternatives in the industry in response to the blurring boundaries of the roles of Cache, DRAM, and NAND, and developing a new type of semiconductor that can create new value. Lastly, we are looking into ways for semiconductor memory to take on more diverse roles in the post-von-Neumann era, rather than being restricted to the role of storing and processing data as part of the logic unit.</p>
<p><strong>Q. What mindset do you emphasize to team members to carry out RTC tasks well?</strong></p>
<p>The most important thing is to have an open mind. Wanting to learn more is an important mindset. That’s because there is no guarantee that today’s technology will exist tomorrow, and the only constant is that technology always changes. We shouldn&#8217;t be afraid of change. Many times, we find ourselves confused and struggling to find a direction given due to the nature of R&amp;D, which requires us to find something that does not exist, something that is completely new. It is the path untaken. So, we must be open to new things. We also need to be able to take risks and be unafraid of failure.</p>
<p><strong>Q. Please share a few words to those who may join RTC in the future.</strong></p>
<p>You normally don’t see the outcome or accomplishments of the R&amp;D immediately. But it has a great advantage; you can lead big changes over the longer term and a sense of pride of shaping the future with our own hands. Above all, I believe RTC is an organization that builds dreams. It would be a lie if I say the work we do is not tough,  but one thing I can say for sure is that you will enjoy working at RTC even though it&#8217;s challenging. I want to ask those of you, who dream of a future developing new technologies for a better world, to dream of a future working at RTC.</p>
<h3 class="tit">Curiosity and Spirit of Challenge for New Field</h3>

<p><strong>Q. What are the roles of your teams under RTC? Please share what you do in each of your teams as well.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Jung-won Seo PL (or Seo):</strong> I am currently the head of PCM PJT team under NM TD overseeing Process Integration (PI). The team is responsible for actual commercialization of semiconductors that will lead future of SK hynix, beyond securing future technology. I oversee the next-generation semiconductor memory, with a special focus on the development and production of PCM.</p>
<p><strong>Hyejung Choi PL (or Choi):</strong> I oversee the Advanced Technology Team under NM TD. If PCM PJT team is responsible for development to commercialize PCM, my team is in charge of securing core technologies necessary to develop the next-generation PCM semiconductor memory technology with a perspective of looking into the next 10 years. We study what form of semiconductor memory will be needed in 10 years and look at materials or operation principle, developing the necessary technologies to achieve this.</p>
<p><strong>Joong-sik Kim TL (or Kim):</strong> I lead Pathfinding in the Future Memory Research Team under NAR. The team explores and studies what types of technologies we will need to prepare for the changes of the environment around memory systems with a long-term perspective. Our goal is to secure a future technology pool that has the potential to be used in next generation semiconductor memory development. We conduct in-depth research into various technologies, while also conducting our own research or testing technologies.</p>
<p><strong>Q. What are the capabilities or qualifications that your team requires?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Seo:</strong> Because we make actual products, we must have the knowledge and understanding of the production process. We must also be able to analyze issues that occur during the process and provide solutions. Being able to work with others and communication skills are a must because we also collaborate with various relevant teams such as process or design throughout the entire development process.</p>
<p><strong>Choi:</strong> Securing future technology requires a strong focus and patience in a certain area because it is a long-term project. The scope of work is also quite comprehensive. We deal with broad range of areas from semiconductor memory elements to processing units and computing systems, meaning that there is a lot to understand or apply. Due to the nature of our work, having curiosity in multiple aspects is helpful.</p>
<p><strong>Kim:</strong> Our work is about exploring new technologies, so, you should be aggressive and frequently make challenges. We must catch up with new technologies across various fields, so you should be a fast learner. You also need to collaborate with other global research institutes on various studies, so language skills and the ability to build network are essential.</p>
<p><strong>Q. Please share a few words to those who may join your teams in the future.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Seo:</strong> I took part in interviewing candidates for new recruits, and I felt that the candidates lacked confidence when introducing themselves. I understand that interviews are challenging and can make you nervous, but it is also a great opportunity to demonstrate confidence along with your strengths and potential. I also encourage newcomers to become an energetic person. If you have an energetic mind, you will adjust well at SK hynix. Cheers, you’ll do great.</p>
<p><strong>Choi:</strong> It is more important to have a mindset of wanting to do well at work rather than having outstanding capabilities. RTC is an organization that works on new technologies to be used in the distant future among the future technologies known today. I look forward to working with someone full of hope for the semiconductor industry.</p>
<p><strong>Kim:</strong> Few has all the capabilities and skills I mentioned above from the first place. If you are not afraid of making new challenges, you will eventually be able to work with others, learn, and thrive. We have great colleagues and a wonderful system. <p>Today, nearly four decades later, inventors are just as vital to the economic, environmental and social well-being of the world. Just as in Edison’s day as in Regan’s day, these forward-thinkers are the pioneers leading us all towards the potential of tomorrow.</p>
<p>At SK hynix, we’re privileged enough to have many of these pioneers within our own organization – driving our organization and our world all towards a more productive, efficient and intelligent future. With so many patents being processed at any given time, SK hynix has established its own in-house patent registration system to simplify the application and submission process.</p>
<p>In tandem, we have created the “Innovation Patent Reward” competition, which allows us to recognize and reward team members who have invented the most promising of these patented technologies. Now in its third year, the competition awards Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to the employees with the most impressive work.</p>
<p>Winners are selected through a qualitative evaluation based on contribution to problem solving along with contribution to sales. This year, a total of 10 innovation patents were selected, and over USD 0.2 million was awarded to 15 incumbent researchers who invented the technology.</p>

<p><strong>Tell us about your Gold-winning patent.</strong> “It’s a patent that supports Boot-Up operation for use of E-Fuse Array in DRAM. It is applied to a specific DDR3 product of ours, and it is being applied to all subsequent products during mass production.”</p>
<p><strong>What inspired the idea? </strong>“In the existing metal fuse, it became difficult to reduce the fuse pitch due to the limitations of the equipment which make it net die bottle neck. In order to improve it, we came up with the way to apply E Fuse IP used in SOC to DRAM.”</p>
<p><strong>How long did it take to bring to life?</strong> “It took approximately one month to conceive of the patent, but it took more than half a year to analyze the actual circuit and construct a suitable circuit for DRAM and the actual product execution period to apply it to the product.”</p>

<p><strong>Tell us about your Silver-winning patent.</strong> “It is a pattern formation method and semiconductor device manufacturing method using this pattern formation method. It has been applied to all products since it established itself as three Tech Platforms since core project product.”</p>
<p><strong>What improvements has it enabled?</strong> “It dramatically improves contacting metal via’s landing margin formed in bit line. The relevant margin has become free to a level where there is no need to evaluate the process margin.”</p>

<p><strong>What inspired the idea?</strong> “There was a possibility of a problem caused by a redundant rupture in PPR – Post Package Repair – one of the DDR4’s specifications, and it made me think that it should be mandatory to be handled inside DRAM. That is where I started the patent.”</p>
<p><strong>How does this technology help your work at SK hynix?</strong> “It enhances mass productivity by removing potential defects for simultaneous access to word lines of duplicate rupture.”</p>

We are living in a very dynamic world right now where things change rapidly, but as we’ve been in the industry for 37 years, we’ve learned how to adjust quickly to meet the needs of our customers and embrace emerging technology and industry standards.</p>
<p>However, it is an ability that we have crafted over the years. A huge requirement for our business is to define products for future needs and future applications. This challenge often requires us to look three to five, even to ten years into the future.</p>
<p>We pride ourselves on our commitment to deliver best-in-class products and be good partners to all. It is a good challenge as we are able to go out and talk to many experts including industry leaders and partners, to understand how we can bring the next level of innovation to our products and the technology overall. </p>

<p>SK hynix finished out the decade on a high note with several key milestones and industry’s firsts, including the development of the world’s fastest high bandwidth memory, HBM2E, and 1Znm 16Gb (Gigabits) DDR4 DRAM, as well as the launch of its Gold S31 consumer SSD and the world’s first 128-Layer 1Tb (Terabit) TLC NAND. We have a very diverse set of customers from both mobile and enterprise sectors and have seen positive growth on both our DRAM and NAND segments. </p>
<p>In addition, we will strive to achieve greater growth with market improvement by focusing on expanding our high-value added products that boast high density, low power consumption, and high-speed characteristics based on next-generation process technologies, in order to respond quickly to changes in demand for each application. </p>
<p>As we look ahead into the new decade, we are confident that the industry will keep growing exponentially as it looks to bring the next generations of technology. As we highlighted during our recent exhibition at CES 2020, industries such as artificial intelligence, AR/VR, autonomous vehicles, big data, IoT and 5G are expected to lead the future. From 2020 and beyond, there are going to be many new applications being rolled out in these industries, and they will all require more memory, higher performance, higher capacity and of course a lower latency.</p>
<p>The industry is forecasting increasing demand for 5G smartphones and we expect to see more growth in 2020. 5G will evolve rapidly and will drive new memory growth for a significant period of time. SK hynix will aim to deliver solid and sustainable growth in the face of structural changes in the demand environment while minimizing the volatility of the business. </p>

<p>Jet Woo, Director of NAND Technical Marketing for SK hynix America, has spent his career with an insatiable curiosity for new technologies and how these products help to improve everyday life. Based in San Jose, he has been with SK hynix for 8 years, starting as a Technical Marketing Manager and climbing his way to a director level. In his role at SK hynix, he takes pride in working with cross-functional teams to make sure that products are successful—helping to launch them into the market.</p>
<p>While SK hynix has been providing top-tier SSDs for PC OEMs, server and data center customers many years, the company has recently expanded its focus to provide these products to consumers in order to meet their complex needs. Jet Woo has also played a vital role in this transition with the recent announcements of the Gold S31 SSD in August 2019 as well as Gold P31 SSDs, which were introduced at CES 2020.</p>
<p>Take a look below for a sneak peek at the upcoming Innovators series with five fast takeaways from Jet Woo:</p>
<h3 class="tit">1. I started my career as an engineer back in the early 2000&#8217;s.</h3>
<p>Since I started my career, I have been focusing on NAND flash technology. At that time there were not many applications around NAND flash technology, back when you could get a USB thumb-drive in megabyte capacity for a very expensive price. The reason I made the switch from engineering to a technical marketing role was because of my own interests and curiosities on how the applications were being used in the field. I find it&#8217;s really an ideal position for me, because I get to leverage my engineering background for the fundamentals and, at the same time, I get to be involved in an innovative way every day, working with my customers, my partners, and industry leaders.</p>

<h3 class="tit">2. Travel helps to be open-minded and adaptable to new things.</h3>
<p>Traveling around to experience new cultures and seeing how different people live their everyday lives really open up new and interesting ways to see opportunities on how technology can improve lives all over the world. As SK hynix continues to expand globally, it is important to recognize and understand many different cultures. Overall, traveling gives me a fresh perspective on how I manage my work and, more importantly, provides a valuable family bonding time.</p>
<h3 class="tit">3. People often don&#8217;t realize how much they demand from their storage devices.</h3>
<p>It is a common problem that people are running out of storage on their laptops or smartphones because many are capturing everything they see. It began with pictures and images, but it is moving to videos with the increased popularity of certain social apps. Basically everything needs memory and storage these days, whether you’re talking about your edge devices or edge computing. And not only is so much data being generated by every individual user, but in the near future, we&#8217;re going to see tons of data being generated and processed by sensors and smart devices all around us.</p>
<h3 class="tit">4. The biggest challenge for the industry is the amount of data being generated.</h3>
<p>We are already in the era of big data. The number of devices collecting and storing data is increasing exponentially. So, everyone in the industry right now is working on how we come up with a way to process the data quickly and efficiently. SK hynix, as one of the top players in the industry, is working aggressively with our partners to tackle this issue with technology innovations. Working at SK hynix with the most brilliant people in the industry is what excites me and drives my work.</p>

<p>In order to actively respond to the needs of its customers, SK hynix started the full-scale mass production of 16nm 64Gb (Gigabit) MLC (Multi Level Cell) NAND Flash. This innovation brought the industry’s thinnest process technology and was more cost competitive due to its smaller chip size. The announcement began SK hynix’s reputation to bring forth a competitive NAND portfolio with high reliability and endurance.</p>
<h3 class="tit">2. <a class="-as-ga" style="text-decoration: underline;" href="https://news.skhynix.com/sk-hynix-developed-the-worlds-first-next-generation-mobile-memory-lpddr4/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-ga-category="sk-hynix-newsroom" data-ga-action="click" data-ga-label="goto_https://news.skhynix.com/sk-hynix-developed-the-worlds-first-next-generation-mobile-memory-lpddr4/">Development of the world&#8217;s first next-generation mobile memory LPDDR4</a>(December 2013)</h3>
<p>At the end on 2013, SK hynix took large steps to heighten its technology leadership by developing the world’s first 8Gb LPDDR4 product with 20nm-class technology. LPDDR4 was the next generation mobile DRAM interface, which was on the process of standardization at that time, and gave customers ultrahigh speed and low power consumption. In fact, the product ran two times faster and does so at lower voltage than of its existing LPDDR3.</p>

<p>SK hynix made a significant advancement in the ultrahigh density server market with the announcement that it had developed the world’s first and highest density of 128GB (Gigabytes) module based on 8Gb DDR4 using its advanced 20nm-class technology. This module has double density compared to the company’s existing 64GB by taking advantage of TSV (Through Silicon Via) technology. This product helped cement the company’s reputation on providing premium DRAM with high density, ultrahigh speed, and low power consumption.</p>

<p>In late 2014, SK hynix announced that it had developed the world’s highest density 16GB NVDIMM (Non-Volatile DIMM) based on 4Gb DDR4 using its advanced 20nm-class technology. By combining DRAM, NAND Flash and the controller in a single module, this product was able to send DRAM data to NAND Flash, whose density was two times bigger than the DRAM, in an unanticipated power loss, thus saving and restoring data safely. Ahead of mass production, SK hynix provided samples to several customers and the product got attention from corporations developing servers and operating systems in need of higher stability.</p>

<p>SK hynix launched 8GB LPDDR4X mobile DRAM, the world’s highest density in the LPDDR4X standard, using its state-of-the-art dual channel 16Gb chips aimed to suit the upcoming flagship smartphone lineups. This technology allowed mobile device users to maximize their experiences and was expected to be included in various applications such as high-end laptops and automotive electronics.</p>

<p>In 2017, SK hynix unveiled the industry’s first 72-Layer 256Gb 3D NAND Flash based on its TLC (Triple-Level Cell) arrays and own technologies. This innovation stacked 1.5 times more layers than the already widely available 48-Layer 3D NAND, achieving 30% more productivity. 3D NAND is widely used in AI (Artificial Intelligence), big data and cloud storage. With this achievement, SK hynix secured the industry’s finest 3D NAND product portfolio, solidifying its business competence in NAND memory solutions.</p>

<p>SK hynix was the first in the industry to combine the 3D CTF (Charge Trap Flash) design with PUC (Peri. Under Cell) technology. This 96-Layer 512Gb “CTF-based 4D NAND Flash” based on its TLC arrays reduced more than 30% of chip size and increased bit productivity per wafer by 49% compared to the company’s 72-layer 512Gb 3D NAND. It also provided a 30% higher write and 25% higher read performance. This achievement marks a milestone for the company’s NAND Flash business as a platform for developing future products.</p>

<p>SK hynix began 2019 with a strong first quarter when the company demonstrated the industry’s first ZNS (Zoned Namespaces) SSD solution at the 2019 OCP Global Summit in San Jose, CA. The ZNS SSD boasted 30% improvement in speed and reliability compared to the existing SSD, as well as more than four<br />
times longer lifetime, making it suitable for the next-gen data centers. SK hynix plans to launch commercial products in the first half of 2020.</p>

<p>In another major milestone this year, SK hynix started mass-producing world’s first 128-Layer 1Tb (Terabit) TLC NAND, the highest vertical stacking and highest density for a TLC NAND Flash chip. This feat was accomplished only eight months after the company previously announced the 96-Layer 4D NAND last year. The new NAND Flash chip has significantly improved profitability with 40% higher productivity and 60% better investment efficiency, targeting high-capacity mobile and enterprise SSD customers.</p>

<p>Earlier this year, SK hynix developed the world’s fastest high bandwidth memory, HBM2E. As the DRAM technology here supports 460GB per second (3.6Gbps per Pin) data processing speed performance, the product is expected to be adopted by high-end machine learning, supercomputers and artificial intelligence. The new HBM2E boasts approximately 50% higher bandwidth and 100% additional capacity compared to the previous HBM2. It will strengthen SK hynix’s leadership in the premium DRAM market.</p>
<p>If we had to sum up the progress of the memory industry – and the continued improvement of SK hynix’ products – over the past 10 years, we would say: smaller, better, faster. From 2013’s mass production of the 16nm NAND flash to 2017’s introduction of the world&#8217;s highest 72-layer 3D NAND Flash, to 2019’s development of the world&#8217;s fastest HBM2E, we’ve delivered reduced chip sizes, ultrahigh speeds, and higher-quality experiences to our clients around the world.</p>

<p>These efforts take many shapes, but our &#8220;Learning Organization Series&#8221; is a particular point of pride for members of SK hynix America at every level. Led by the very talented people from within our company, these are monthly conversations on topics ranging from DRAM technology innovations and artificial intelligence to stocks and even wine. Diverse dialogues, these sessions create a space where employees can grow beyond their areas of immediate focus. They offer the opportunity for colleagues to learn from other colleagues and engage with them in new, enriching ways.<br />

<p>One poignant session from recent memory was led by a VP of International Trade and Regulatory Affairs back in July. Rather than discussing the trade issues and regulatory matters that he routinely discusses during the workday, he chose to guide coworkers through a special hobby of his &#8211; wine. Leading the group through an advanced wine class, he covered everything from the grape to the wineries, from pinot noir to sauvignon blanc.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was really nice to get the perspective of a wine connoisseur on the origins of the types of wine. To be able to understand the pairing and the varieties of taste of wine was exceptional,” explained Larry Huynh, HR Team, who attended the Wine Learning Session. “On a bonus, it was a really great incentive to have a trivia to win the prizes!”<br />

<p>Another session from May led by a senior manager of DRAM technical marketing explored the expanding boundaries of the AI revolution. And in June, a member of our sales team guided the audience through the delicate art of business communication.</p>
<p>We call this “knowledge sharing,” and it doesn’t stop at these monthly sessions. We feel that a culture of knowledge-sharing is one that promotes the kind of collaboration, curiosity, and enthusiasm that we seek to build into every aspect of our work. It’s a cross-pollination of ideas between each of our business sectors and beyond. From sales, to engineering, to regulatory affairs, each of our employees has something to share, and more importantly, something to learn.</p>
<p>“I love attending learning sessions. They are eye-opening and extremely informative for me as a sales professional,” shared Ty Chatchaidech, Sales Lead Team. They help me achieve better understanding of the whole ecosystem.”</p>
<p>SK hynix believes that a shared set of social values and a strong sense of community in the workplace allows employees to feel comfortable and empowered, and by extension, propels the company forward. Our customers see this in the quality of our products, in the depth of our ideas, and in the creativity of our concepts.</p>
