<p>SK hynix Inc. (or “the company”, <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="https://www.skhynix.com/eng/main.do" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">www.skhynix.com</a></span>) announced today that it has established a roadmap to actively utilize recycled<sup>1</sup> and renewable<sup>2</sup> materials in production, marking the first case that a semiconductor company lays out such mid- to long-term plan.</p>
<p style="font-size: 14px; font-style: italic; color: #555;"><sup>1</sup><strong>Recycled Materials</strong>: Materials extracted, recovered and reprocessed from pre-consumer waste generated in the manufacturing process before arrival at end users or from post-consumer waste disposed of after use.<br />
<sup>2</sup><strong>Renewable Materials</strong>: Sustainable materials that originate from nature and can be regenerated naturally over time, ultimately not depleted (e.g. wood, etc.).</p>
<p>&#8220;In order to achieve Net Zero, or Carbon Neutrality, establishing a circular economy system centered on resource recycling has become an important task for countries and companies around the world,&#8221; SK hynix said. &#8220;In line with this trend, we have decided to preemptively establish and faithfully implement the goal of increasing the use of recycled materials in stages.&#8221;</p>
<p>Through this roadmap, SK hynix aims to raise the proportion of recycled materials used in the products currently manufactured by the company to 25% by 2025 and more than 30% (based on weight) by 2030.</p>

<p>As part of the plan, SK hynix will start with essential metals for semiconductor production, such as copper, tin, and gold, and replace them with recycled materials. Industry experts point out that metal materials are the most effective when it comes to resource circulation as they account for a large proportion of the weight of finished memory products and are difficult to replace with other materials.</p>
<p>The company also plans to make all-out efforts to promote resource circularity, including replacing the plastic packaging used to protect finished semiconductor products with recycled plastic.</p>
<p>To this end, SK hynix prepared an implementation system for the goals in the roadmap.</p>
<p>The company will strengthen certification procedures and quality evaluation for recycled materials purchased directly by the company, and decide whether to apply the materials included in the parts supplied by business partners after receiving and reviewing the quality evaluation. In addition, SK hynix plans to encourage its suppliers to join the efforts to obtain validation from publicly trusted external organizations, such as ISO 14021<sup>3</sup>, to verify the use and proportion of recycled materials. In this process, the company will provide its unsparing support to its suppliers if necessary.</p>
<p style="font-size: 14px; font-style: italic; color: #555;"><sup>3</sup><strong>ISO 14021</strong>: Type 2 environmental label established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that manufacturers adopt to declare themselves environmentally friendly</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>&#8211; Awarded the Automotive Safety Integrity Level D (ASIL-D), the highest level of initial hazard defined within ISO 26262</strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8211; Certification to raise company’s competitive edge in semiconductor memory technology for ADAS and other autonomous vehicle solutions</strong></p>
<p>SK hynix announced that it has received an ISO 26262: 2018 FSM (Functional Safety Management) certification, the international standard for functional safety in automotive semiconductors. The global automotive functional safety certification institute, TUV Nord, conducted the assessment. Both companies commemorated the distinction by hosting an online ceremony. In attendance at the ceremony were Daeyong Shim, Head of Automotive Business, and Junho Song, Head of Quality System, from SK hynix and Bianca Pfuff, Profit Center Manager Functional Safety and Deputy Head of Certification Body SEECERT, and Josef Neumann, Senior Project Manager Functional Safety, from TUV Nord.</p>
<p>The ISO 26262 is the international standard for automobile functional safety established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2011 to prevent accidents caused by automotive electrical and electronic systems failures. This certification awarded to SK hynix, ISO 26262: 2018, is the latest version with additional requirements for automotive semiconductors. In the automotive industry, safety, quality, and reliability are paramount. Therefore, it is becoming essential that producers of car electronic device related to safety meet ISO 26262 standards.</p>
<p>This certification provides SK hynix with a solid foundation to lead the automotive semiconductor memory market forward, supported by its competitive product offering. The company achieved the top Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) rank in the industry, obtaining an ASIL-D distinction, the highest of four certification levels.</p>
<p>For the FSM certification, the assessment was conducted for SK hynix’s 8Gb LPDDR5. LPDDR5 is a high-capacity, high-performance, low-power memory component essential for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle technology. SK hynix will continue to strengthen its position in the automotive market by adding products such as Universal Flash Storage (UFS) and High Bandwidth Memory 2E/3 (HBM2E/3) to its automotive product portfolio.</p>
<p>Daeyong Shim, Head of SK hynix’s Automotive Business, said, “We plan to expand strategic partnership with our automotive clients as this certification proves SK hynix’s automotive semiconductors possess world-leading functional safety technology.” Junho Song, Head of Quality System at SK hynix, added, “We will continue to enhance our safety, quality, and reliability to advance our position in the growing automotive memory market.”</p>
<p>Meanwhile, according to Strategy Analytics, the total ADAS memory market is expected to grow nearly three times by 2028, with an average annual growth (CAGR) of 24.5% (in terms of sales).</p>

<p>HSA (Hyundai Semiconductor America), the semiconductor corporation of HEI(President: Kim, Young Hwan) in the U.S., has recently attained the ISO 9002 and ISO 14001, the international certificate for quality and environment. HSA, located in Eugene, Oregon, has been extensively evaluated its quality and environment by UL (Under writers Laboratories Inc.), and certified for the two in early May. HSA came into operation in March of 1998, and currently produces 64M SD RAM by fully using the equipment of which capacity is as much as 30,000 eight-inch waper per month. With this certificate, it took only a year to become the first corporation in the U.S. that attains both the ISO 9002 and ISO 14001 at the same time. Considering the industrial aspects of semiconductor, it usually takes at least two to four years to get the ISO 9000 on quality management and quality assurance first and then to get the ISO 14000 on environmental management. However, HSA has proven its capability of quality and environmental management by attaining both of them simultaneously, and moreover, cutting the period by one year. The ISO 9000 and 14000 are the international certificate issued only when first the conditions for quality and environment are set by International Organization for Standardization, and then qualifications are fulfilled after evaluated by each certificate institution. ISO 9000 is the standard for quality management and quality assurance for the purpose of satisfying the needs of customer regarding products and services; ISO 14000 is the standard for implementing and improving the environment management system regarding environmental protection.
