Because of short-and long-term market conditions, which include a steep reduction in the price of memory chips worldwide and accelerated technological migration towards next-generation production standards, hynix Semiconductor Inc. has decided to close its Eugene fabrication facility. The production of the fabrication plant will be eventually stopped by end of September.

As part of the deliberations that led to this shutdown, hynix Semiconductor Inc., the parent company of hynix Semiconductor Manufacturing America Inc., is seriously considering options to utilize our Eugene facilities after the closure. Options include pursuing a similar business to the current semiconductor operation; selling the equipment, building and land as a package to a third-party semiconductor manufacturer; and selling the building and land separately from the equipment which will be relocated. As soon as decisions are finalized, the company will communicate plans to the Eugene community and Oregon government leaders.

hynix Semiconductor Inc. has also reviewed various options in order to utilize other 200mm wafer fabrication plants located in Icheon and Cheongju, Korea. Some are planned either to produce consumer DRAM and System IC products or to provide foundry service. The remainder will be seriously considered to sell the equipment.

hynix Semiconductor Inc. (‘hynix’ or ‘the Company’) today announced it has contracted with Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province in China for setting up a plant in China. By completing the contract,

hynix explained it is able to obtain solid footing for the long-term competitiveness since the plant is expected to help in expanding manufacturing facilities for 12-inch wafers through the alliance with STMicro, enforcing cost competitiveness by utilizing low cost manufacturing environment, maintaining leading position in the Chinese market and resolving trade issues including countervailing duties.

In addition, hynix, which reported record profit for its second quarter and posted fourth straight quarterly profit, added it aims to be a leading memory chip manufacturer as the Company secured stable financial base for the business normalization.

hynix plans to complete construction of the China chip plant by the second half of 2005 and expects to start mass production in 2006.

HSA (Hyundai Semiconductor America), the semiconductor corporation of HEI(President: Kim, Young Hwan) in the U.S., has recently attained the ISO 9002 and ISO 14001, the international certificate for quality and environment. HSA, located in Eugene, Oregon, has been extensively evaluated its quality and environment by UL (Under writers Laboratories Inc.), and certified for the two in early May. HSA came into operation in March of 1998, and currently produces 64M SD RAM by fully using the equipment of which capacity is as much as 30,000 eight-inch waper per month. With this certificate, it took only a year to become the first corporation in the U.S. that attains both the ISO 9002 and ISO 14001 at the same time. Considering the industrial aspects of semiconductor, it usually takes at least two to four years to get the ISO 9000 on quality management and quality assurance first and then to get the ISO 14000 on environmental management. However, HSA has proven its capability of quality and environmental management by attaining both of them simultaneously, and moreover, cutting the period by one year. The ISO 9000 and 14000 are the international certificate issued only when first the conditions for quality and environment are set by International Organization for Standardization, and then qualifications are fulfilled after evaluated by each certificate institution. ISO 9000 is the standard for quality management and quality assurance for the purpose of satisfying the needs of customer regarding products and services; ISO 14000 is the standard for implementing and improving the environment management system regarding environmental protection. HEI, the holding company, takes care of production design and sale of HSA, and every single plant of HEI has attained the certificate of ISO 9001 and 14001 on its design, production, and sale.
